1845: Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven" is published.


1856: Queen Victoria creates the Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery in the British Army. Since 1856 1,358 have been awarded.



1886: The first gasoline automobile is patented by Karl Benz

 1954: Oprah Winfrey - Queen of the talkshow- is born in Mississippi.
