Top 10 Fun facts: New York


Hello Gentle Readers. After our visit to New York I wanted to find out more about the city so here are my fun facts on the Big Apple.

1. You are more likely to be bitten by a New Yorker in New York than by a shark anywhere in the world.

2. The island of Manhatten was purchased from the Manhatten indians for the equivalent of $1000 in todays currency.

3. The city used to be called New Amsterdam but when it was gifted to the 18 year old Duke of York he changed the name.

4. It is not illegal to walk around topless in New York.


5. With 800 languages being spoken there. New York is the most linguistically diverse city on the planet.

6. On Manhatten the furthest anyone can walk to the nearest subway station is 0.8 miles (1.2 km)


6. Between 2009 and 2014 the Cost of Living went up 23% in New York.

7. 21% of all school children in New York are obese.

8. A Central Park hot dog vendor will pay around $300,000 for the right to sell them.

9. 37% of people who live in New York were born outside the United States.

10. There is a skyscraper in New York with no windows.
