1789: Citizens of Paris storm the Bastille fort.


 

1862: Gustav Klimt, Austrian painter is born.
 

1865: The Matterhorn is climbed for the first time.

1881: Outlaw Billy the Kid is shot dead by Pat Garrett.


 

1912: Woody Guthrie, American folk singer and political activist is born.

 

1933: Gleichschaltung: In Germany, all political parties, apart from Hitler's Nazi's are banned.

 

1965: Mariner 4 flies past Mars and sends back the first detailed, close up pictures taken of the surface of another planet.
