1655: French poet Cyrano de Bergerac dies.

1866: British author Beatrice Potter is born.

1868: In the USA the 14th ammendment is passed guaranteeing African Americans citizenship.



1939: The Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon helmet is discovered.



1976: In China  the Tangshan earthquakes kills  over 240,000 people.
