Harmony in all things in China

Hello Gentle Readers.
35 years ago Paul McArtney and Stevie Wonder released the song "Ebony and Ivory".  It contained the lines;
'Ebony and Ivory
Live together in perfect Harmony."

In this post, the 11th on China's Core Socialist Values, I want to look at race. I know it can be a difficult topic to discuss but Harmony in my mind means that everyone, no matter their backgrounds, should be able to get along peacefully and respectfully.

In China 92% of the people come from 1 ethnic group, the Han. There is also another 55 ethnic groups recognised by the PRC government.

In recent years there has been a growth in anti-islamic sentiment amongst the Han majority. This means that certain groups in China, Muslims for the most part, feel that they have been discriminated against.

President Xi recently said that he would like to see cross ethnic relationships between Han and non Han people. He believes that one China should be one culture and one identity.

55 Ethnicities. 1 China

His opponents from these minorities have claimed that this 'enlightened' stance is just a way to weaken the smaller groups through mixed marriages because the children born to these unions will most likely be raised in or aspire to be more Han-like.

Is Harmony really that complicated?
