Wednesday Thought: Doctor Johnson

Greetings Gentle Reader. On this day in 1784, one of the greatest minds of the 18th century, or indeed any century, shuffled off this mortal coil.

His name was Samuel Johnson and he was a man who had a way with words that most of us can only wish for. He was an essayist and a novelist but his greatest achievement was his Dictionary which for over a century was considered the most important reference book ever.

He was also a character in one of the best episodes of Black Adder.

Here for you are some wise words from Doctor Johnson.

My dear friend, clear your mind of cant.

The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.

When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.

He that will enjoy the brightness of sunshine, must quit the shade.

Bachelors have consciences, married men have wives.

Praise, like gold and diamonds, owes its value only to its scarcity.
