Holidays in Armenia: Day 1

Hello there Gentle Readers

This week is our first week on holiday since we arrived in Armenia and we have been on our travels.

Geghard Monastary

Temple of Garni

Instead of flying off to exotic locations however we decided to stay in this beautiful country and explore some of Armenia's beautiful scenery and buildings and immerse ourselves in its culture.

Today we took a guided bus tour to the Temple of Garni and Geghard Monastery.

Garni temple is the only Pagan temple left in Armenia and is about 2000 years old. In 1679 it was destroyed by a massive earthquake but was rebuilt using the original materials by the Soviets in the 1970s.

Gegherd Monastary dates from the 4th century and is built by a series of natural caves in the beautiful and steep mountains that surround it. The current main building dates from the 12th century.

We also saw Armenian bread Lavash being made in the traditional way.

It was a fun day trip and there is more to come. I will try to post every day. Stay tuned

Sleepy Robert
