Today in History: March 5th

1279: The Livonian order is defeated in the Battle of Aizkraukle by the forces of the Duchy of Lithuania.

1933 – The Nazi party receives 43.9% at the Reichstag elections which allows the Nazis to later pass the Enabling Act and establish a dictatorship.





1946: Winston Churchill coins the phrase "The Iron Curtain" for the first time in a speach in the USA.



1953: Josef Stalin, Leader of the USSR dies.



1984: The UK Miners strike begins. The strike would last for 18 months.
