Tomorrow Gentle Reader, the Latvian parliament or Saeima, will choose the new President of Latvia.
On the 10th April, the incumbent President, Andris Berzins, told the country he would not seek re-election.
Andris Berzins
Most Latvian's were happy about this.
The future leader of Latvia will NOT be chosen by the people but by the members of parliament. I don't know about you, Gentle Reader, but that doesn't seem fair to me.
The winning candidate only needs 51 of the 100 strong Saeima to become Latvia's world face.
51 out of 2 million.....you do the math.
The President of Latvia:
- represents the country abroad
- ratifies international treaties
- appoints diplomats
- leads the armed forces
- grants amnesty
- suggests changes and can make ne laws
It does not seem fair that such a small minority can choose the person who will have that much power in a democratic country.
The 4 prospective candidates are
Raimonds Vejonis Egils Levits
Martins Bondors Sergejs Dolgopolovs
Strange looking bunch and not a uterus between them.....who would you vote for?
