The Cat House, Riga

The Cat House seen from the south
Located on Meistaru iela in the Old Town of Riga, the Cat House or Kaku nams was designed by Friedrich Scheffel and built in 1909. It is styled as medievel with Art Nouveau elements. It is named for the two cat sculptures that are placed on its roof.

Originally the cats were placed so that their bottoms were pointed towards the house of the Great Guild because the owners of the building had a grudge against the Great Guild, they were later ordered to turn the cats around.
