 1254: Marco Polo, Italian merchant and explorer is born.

1812– The French army under Napoleon reaches the Kremlin in Moscow.

1835: HMS Beagle with Charles Darwin on board arrives at the Galapagos Islands.

 

1890: Agatha Christie, English crime novelist is born.

1916: Tanks are used in battle for the first time during the Battle of the Somme.

 

1935: Germany adopts a new national flag. It bears the Nazi Swastika.

1959: Nikita Khrushchev becomes the first Soviet leader to visit the USA.
