Latvia. 17th March 1944.

17th March 1944 was an important date in Latvian history.

It was on this date that the Latvian Central Council, the legitimate resistance against Nazi occupation
issued a memorandum that clearly stated that the annexation of Latvia by the advancing Soviet Army would be an "illegal act"
The memo written by Konstantins Cakste (below) and F. Cielens was signed by 189 senior political and public figures in clear defiance of Nazi rules. The men who signed the document faced imprisonment of execution if captured by the Nazis.

Given the current sabre rattling of Russia's current President, maybe Latvia and the other Baltic States should show the same defiance now.
