Ziepniekkalns is located on the West side of the Daugava river and is found close to the southern border of the city.
It is the newest of Riga's neighbourhoods, being built in the 1980's and 1990's. The housing is mostly Soviet built 10 story apartment buildings.
The contrast between these newly built homes and the more traditional 1960's 3 story is quite stark.
The neighbourhood has an area of around 11 square kilometres, which makes it slightly larger than the average Riga neighbourhood size.
