With this ring.....
Hey Gentle Readers, today is an important day for Lena and me. We are going to get measured for our wedding rings.
I have been married before but didn’t really wear my ring because of the nasty, horrible job I did. (I was a worker in a slaughterhouse and didn't want to damage it)
We are getting our rings made from gold we already have and gold that has been donated by family members. From this we will get two new rings and we can choose our own design....nice huh?
So this got me thinking....why do we wear wedding rings?
The wedding band originated in Ancient Egypt where newly married couples would tie strips of hemp, leather or reeds around their fingers as a symbol of eternity and love. Even carved bone or ivory was used.
The style, design and materials have changed over the years but the basic shape is the same. Gold became popular around the 3rd Century among rich people.
The two ring wedding ceremony is actually a relatively new development, wedding rings for men were heavily marketed in the 1920's and 1930's and it was not until WW2 that men started wearing wedding rings in huge numbers.
Why the 3rd finger? In Egyptian times it was believed that this finger was connected directly to the heart.
Anyway I can wait to get mine and put it on for real.
